It Doesn’t Have to Be “Baby Furniture” to be Furniture For a Baby

When planning a nursery for your baby, deciding what kind of baby furniture you will need is the first important decision. Most furniture in the room does not have to be “special baby furniture.” The exceptions to this are the crib and the changing table.

Everything else can be just normal furniture. That means you don’t necessarily have to spend a lot for baby furniture, which we all know is a relief. Let’s examine the needs you will have:

You will need to have some place to store diapering accessories such as extra diapers, wipes, and trash bags. For a while, this piece of baby furniture can also be where you put baby’s medicine and other grooming items.

You will need a place for clean clothes. If your baby is lucky enough to have a closet, the baby furniture you buy for this area can be as simple as clear stackable plastic drawers. Then you can hang up the rest of the baby clothes on tiny baby hangers.

You may want a chest of drawers-type piece of baby furniture in the room for use now and later on when your baby starts learning to dress himself. Actually, in place of that in our baby’s nursery, we have a buffet designed for a dining room with two doors that swing open as opposed to drawers. It makes a fantastic bookshelf on the inside and the outer open shelves are perfect for photos and toys.

When the toys you baby receives begin to overflow into the rest of the house, it is time for some kind of baby furniture for toys. Again, this can vary from plastic drawers to a traditional wooden toy chest. Just make sure that the toy box has a safety lid to prevent crush injuries.

With all of these needs in mind, it is now possible to choose furniture for your baby. You can scour flea markets for pieces with character or buy more modern choices from a store like IKEA.

If you buy old furniture, make sure there is no possibility that your baby could ingest peeled paint. The best way to keep your baby safe in this regard is to strip off old paint and refinish in the way you would like. Also, if you are pregnant, you need to either have your husband do this part or wear a heavy-duty mask.

Good luck finding the perfect baby furniture for your nursery!
